‘the WORD theatre brings the BIGGEST, most exciting, and relevant Spoken Word artists in the UK to the stunning theatre stage of the New Theatre Royal every month. Set to be one of the UK’s biggest Spoken Word nights, featuring award winning performers from around the county, an open mic, and live music.
The first event will bring the Saboteur Award winning ‘Fat Girls Don’t Dance’ Spoken Word show by Maria Ferguson, supported by Peterborough Poet Laureate Charlie Genever.

Maria Ferguson

Maria Ferguson is a spoken word artist who blends theatre, storytelling, and dance in her latest show ‘Fat Girls Don’t Dance’. This award winning show explores food, body image, and performance.

Hailing from Essex, Maria has performed at spoken word nights across the UK, as well as Bestival, Latitude and Secret Garden Party. She was commissioned by The Roundhouse, BBC Radio 1 and The Royal Academy of Art. This year, Maria won the Saboteur award for ‘Best Spoken Word show’.

Charley Genever

Charley Genever is the Poet Laureate for Peterborough, and the youngest to earn the title. She has worked with and performed for Apples and Snakes, the Poetry Society and the South Bank Centre (where she programmed National Poetry Day Live). She hosts the ‘Pint of Poetry’ Open Mic and produces the quarterly night, ‘Freak Speak’.

 

She has also been published in multiple anthologies including ‘The Great British Write Off’ (Bonacia), Poetry Rivals 2015 (Poetry Rivals), ‘Madder Than We Look’ (Write Minds), and her poem ‘Thread in Three Parts’ is due for publication this year in Mud Press’ latest anthology, ‘W O M A N’.
